Michael J. Kaufman is the Dean and Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of Law. Prior to joining Santa Clara University, Dean Kaufman served as Loyola University Chicago’s Acting Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Vice Provost for Academic Strategy, and Dean of the School of Law. At Loyola Chicago, Dean Kaufman built the law school's innovative hybrid Weekend JD program and founded Loyola’s Rodin Center for Social Justice, the Education Law and Policy Institute, the Anti-bullying Project, the Rule of Law Institute, and the Institute for Investor Protection. Dean Kaufman is an award-winning teacher and renowned scholar, who has published more than 35 books and numerous law review articles in the areas of his expertise, including education law, equity, policy, and pedagogy.

A dedicated and award-winning public servant, Dean Kaufman was elected three times to serve on the Board of Education for a diverse K-12 school district in the Chicago area. As the Board’s president, he led multiple stakeholders in a community-wide strategic planning process, helped to consolidate and integrate racially segregated neighboring school districts, and balanced multi-million dollar budgets with transparency. Dean Kaufman also has served as a public arbitrator and expert consultant for litigation matters. He has delivered bar examination review lectures to hundreds of thousands of law school graduates for bar exams throughout the country.

After graduating from Kenyon College and receiving his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, Dean Kaufman clerked for the Honorable Nathaniel R. Jones of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and practiced civil rights litigation at a large private firm in Chicago.

Sherelyn R. Kaufman

Sherry Kaufman is an Early Education Consultant and Professor at Erikson Institute, Graduate School in Child Development. She is also Assistant Director of the California Native Garden Foundation, a laboratory for nature-based urban living. She served for 9 years as Consultant and Teacher at Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, Illinois, and for 7 years as Director of Winnetka Public School Nursery, a private non-profit preschool with over 90 years of history in progressive, constructivist early childhood education. She earned her B.A. in English Honors from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where she was named to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated from University of Michigan Law School with a J.D. cum laude in 1983. Sherry practiced school law in private law firms, where she counseled school districts in compliance issues and litigation. She also served as Assistant Regional Attorney with the U.S. Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights. After earning her Master of Arts in Teaching from National-Louis University in Illinois, she taught at Ravinia Nursery School and Baker Demonstration School.
