About the authors

Bernard Schwartz

Late Chapman Distinguished Professor of Law

University of Tulsa College of Law

Professor Bernard Schwartz came to the University of Tulsa College of Law in 1992, where he served as the Chapman Distinguished Professor of Law until his death on December 23, 1997, at the age of 74. Prior to coming to Tulsa, Professor Schwartz had served on the law faculty of New York University for 45 years.

Professor Schwartz was married for 47 years to Aileen Haas Schwartz, a retired judge of New York Family Court, and they had one son, Brian. Professor Schwartz taught law for fifty years, and he was regarded as an outstanding teacher. He was a legal scholar who was considered to be an expert in the areas of administrative law, comparative jurisprudence, legal history, and constitutional law.

Professor Schwartz was also a prolific author who wrote more than sixty books and numerous articles. He was perhaps best known for his writings about the U.S. Supreme Court and the Justices.

Roberto L. Corrada

Mulligan Burleson Chair in Modern Learning, Professor of Law

University of Denver Sturm College of Law

As Mulligan Burleson Chair in Modern Learning and Professor at University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Roberto Corrada has devoted his scholarly attention to four primary areas: the rights of ethnic and sexual minorities; the public-private distinction in labor and employment law; the scholarship of teaching and learning; and the rights of college athletes. He has published articles on these subjects in the Texas A&M Law Review, the Wake Forest Law Review, the Cincinnati Law Review, the Houston Law Review, the Miami Law Review, the Catholic University Law Review, the Berkeley Journal of Labor & Employment Law, and the Journal of Legal Education, among others. In addition, Corrada has published casebooks in administrative law, employment discrimination law, and labor law.

A distinguished teacher, Corrada has been recognized for his innovative work in the classroom. In 2000, he was selected as a national Carnegie scholar for his active and collaborative learning efforts in his labor law classroom. In 2002, he was named University of Denver College of Law Donald & Susan Sturm Professor for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. He has won the University of Denver Distinguished Teaching Award and has been recognized as a DU Law Star.

For 30+ years, Corrada has been extensively involved in service work with local and national institutions. In 1998, he was chairman of the board of the ACLU of Colorado. In 2002, he served as chair of the Association of American Law Schools Labor & Employment Relations Section. From 2000–2010, he served as secretary of the Latino Critical Legal Theory Association (“LatCrit”). In 2007, he helped form the Denver Urban Debate League, where he has served as Co-Chair of the Board of Directors.

J. Robert Brown

Lawrence W. Treece Professor of Corporate Governance and Professor of Law

University of Denver Sturm College of Law

For more than three decades, Professor Brown has taught courses on administrative and corporate/securities law. He has authored numerous publications in the area, with several having been cited by the US Supreme Court. Jay has spent considerable time abroad, particularly in the former Soviet Union, advising governments on corporate and securities matters, and has received two Fulbright awards, one to teach and research in Almaty, Kazakhstan and the other to teach and research in Rome, Italy. He served as the associate dean for academic affairs at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law from 2000–2004 and served as a board member on the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) from 2018 until Jan. 2021. Jay is an arbitrator for FINRA and, among other outside activities, serves on the board of directors of the St. Francis Center, a non-profit that provides services to the homeless, and the Senior Support Center, a non-profit that provides services to homeless seniors.

Jessica L. West

Assistant Professor of Law

Mitchell Hamline School of Law

Jessica L. West is Assistant Professor of Law at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, where she directs the First Amendment Activism Clinic. Her scholarship focuses on administrative law, the First Amendment, protest and dissent, criminal procedure, and the relationship between law and social movements. She is the author of a number of articles including Protest Is Different, published in the University of Richmond Law Review, and Is Injustice Relevant?: Narrative and Blameworthiness in Protester Trials, published in the Temple Law Review.

Before joining Mitchell Hamline, Professor West served as Assistant Dean for Academic Success Programs and Lecturer at the University of Washington School of Law, where she taught Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and other courses. She previously held faculty appointments at Vermont Law School, the University of Washington Bothell, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, and has been a visiting researcher at Yale Law School. Her international academic work includes appointments at ESADE Law School in Barcelona and the University of Granada School of Law in Spain.

Prior to entering full-time academia, Professor West practiced law for more than fifteen years, specializing in criminal defense, civil rights, employment discrimination, and appellate litigation. She founded and managed a Denver-based law firm and has appeared in state and federal courts in complex criminal and civil rights matters. She remains actively engaged in public legal education and frequently presents and comments on issues involving protest rights, civil liberties, constitutional law, and the rule of law.
