Aspen Publishing Accessibility Statement

Accessibility

Our Commitment to Accessible Legal Education

At Aspen Publishing, our mission is to empower and inspire law students, undergraduates, and educators to achieve educational and professional success. That mission means nothing if our content and platforms are not accessible to everyone. We are committed to ensuring that all learners — regardless of ability — can fully engage with our textbooks, digital products, and learning tools.

Accessibility is not a checkbox. It is a core part of how we design, develop, and deliver legal education.

Standards We Follow

Aspen Publishing works to ensure our digital products and platforms conform to the following recognized accessibility standards:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA – Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
  • Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended in 2017
  • ADA Title II and Title III, which govern accessibility obligations for the public and private educational institutions that use our products
  • European Accessibility Act (EAA) – EU Directive 2019/882, which came into force on June 28, 2025, requiring that eBooks and digital publishing services be accessible to persons with disabilities
  • EPUB Accessibility 1.1 – the technical standard for accessible eBook content, broadly endorsed across the publishing industry by leading standards and advocacy organizations including the W3C, DAISY Consortium, Benetech, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG), and the Library of Congress

Our Products and Platforms

Aspen's digital learning ecosystem — including Casebook Connect, Connected eBooks, LEAF from Aspen, Connected Quizzing, PracticePerfect, Aspen Courses, and the Aspen Learning Library — is designed with all learners in mind. We are continuously working to evaluate and improve the accessibility of these platforms.

Accessibility Conformance Reports (ACRs), also known as Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs), are available upon request for our key digital products. To request a VPAT, please contact us at accessibility@aspenpublishing.com

Supporting Institutional Compliance

DOJ ADA Title II Update

The U.S. Department of Justice's updated ADA Title II rule requires public entities — including public colleges, universities, and law schools — to bring their web content and mobile applications into conformance with WCAG 2.1 AA. Compliance deadlines took effect in April2026. Aspen Publishing's digital products are designed to help institutions meet these requirements. We are available to work directly with law school and undergraduate disability services offices and IT procurement teams to provide documentation, VPATs, and technical support as institutions navigate compliance.

European Accessibility Act (EAA)

The EAA came into force on June 28, 2025, establishing binding accessibility requirements for eBooks and digital publishing services sold in the European Union. The Act requires that eBooks be perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust — principles aligned with WCAG 2.1 — and that accessibility features be discoverable through standardized metadata so that readers can make informed decisions before purchase.

Aspen Publishing has remediated our full EPUB catalog and EPUB metadata to conform with EAA requirements and the EPUB Accessibility 1.1 specification. This includes:

  • Accessible EPUB content conforming to WCAG 2.1 AA and EPUB Accessibility 1.1, across our entire catalog
  • Accessibility metadata embedded within each EPUB file so that readers, platforms, and distributors can surface accessibility information at the point of discovery and purchase
  • ONIX metadata updated to communicate the accessibility features of our titles across the publishing supply chain

Benetech GCA Certification

We are currently pursuing Benetech Global Certified Accessible (GCA) certification for our EPUB production workflow. GCA certification, administered by Benetech, evaluates whether EPUB content conforms to both WCAG 2.1 Level AA and the EPUB Accessibility 1.1 specification. This certification will provide independent, third-party verification of our accessibility standards as a born-accessible publisher going forward.

How We Work Toward Accessibility

 random

Design and Development

We incorporate accessibility considerations throughout the product development lifecycle — from initial planning and content creation through testing and release. Our teams work with accessibility experts that help guide us to achieve our accessibility goals.

Testing and Evaluation

We evaluate our digital platforms and content throughout the development lifecycle and incorporate accessibility considerations into our design and review processes, including collaboration with third‑party accessibility experts.

We also conduct ongoing user research and usability testing with students and faculty to better understand how our products are used in real educational settings. Insights from this research help inform improvements to usability, clarity, and overall access for a broad range of users.

Alternate Formats

We recognize that some students require content in formats other than the standard print or digital editions. Aspen Publishing provides digital files in alternate formats to qualified students with disabilities.

Accessibility Services offices may request alternate format files directly from Aspen Publishing at no charge by emailing accessibility@aspenpublishing.com.

Feedback and Contact

We want to hear from you. If you experience an accessibility barrier with any Aspen Publishing product or platform, or if you have questions, comments, or suggestions, please reach out to us:

Email: accessibility@aspenpublishing.com

We are committed to responding to accessibility requests in a timely manner and working with students, faculty, and Accessibility Services offices to find appropriate solutions.

Ongoing Commitment

Accessibility is a journey, not a destination. We are transparent about where we are today and committed to continuous improvement. We will regularly review and update this statement as our products, platforms, and standards evolve.
