In this, the 14th edition of Stephen Gillers’ book, Regulation of Lawyers: Problems of Law and Ethics, the author’s goal as always has been to teach the law and rules governing lawyers and judges with engaging writing, a conversational voice, and the use of extralegal sources. He sprinkles the text with literary and historical references, references to current events, amplifying asides (“by the way” stories), and humor. There are new cases, and some repeat cases have been further edited. New problems are added and other problems have been revised to better crystalize their issues. As always, the problems aim for credibility through detail. Nearly all chapters contain short “Pop-up Questions” about the material, with answers a few pages later. These offer students a form of self-study with no need for class discussion. Likewise, the clarity of notes on secondary issues makes it feasible to assign most of them with limited class discussion, freeing class time for the principal cases, the text of the law and rules governing lawyers and judges, and the problems. Professor Gillers at times adds his own views on issues and invites disagreement.
